Joseph Budzynski Named 2019 Nonprofit CFO of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 24, 2019—Volunteers of America, one of the nation’s oldest and largest human service providers, is pleased to announce Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Joseph Budzynski has been selected 2019 Nonprofit CFO of the Year by the CFO Awards.

As chief financial officer, Budzynski directs strategies and infrastructure that ensures the growth and stability of the organization. This includes multi-state healthcare operations, housing development and housing operations at Volunteers of America. During his tenure, consolidated revenues have grown by 54 percent, from $845 million to more than $1.3 billion.

In his position, Budzynski provides financial consulting services to 31 VOA affiliates, including organizational assessments, assisting with the hiring local CFOs and key staff, providing funding and growth strategies to affiliates, and stepping in to financially reboot affiliates as needed. During the 2019 government shutdown, he worked to ensure adequate multimillion dollar bridge loans were provided to fund VOA essential services.

Budzynski started with Volunteers of America in 2006 as vice president and chief accounting officer. He provided strategic and technical support to affiliate offices, as well as industry and organizational development plans tailored to specific local offices that included strategic initiatives, program enhancements and setting key performance triggers. He managed development and operations accounting for more than 400 housing properties, including financial compliance with HUD and tax credit restrictions, as well as healthcare operations serving more than 1,350 clients receiving nursing care or living at senior independent and assisted living properties.

Prior to joining Volunteers of America, Budzynski served as chief financial officer of The Greater Washington Board of Trade, a regional chamber of commerce. He has also worked in the healthcare and telecom industries, both for-profit and nonprofit.

Budzynski is a member of Leadership Greater Washington’s Class of 2006, and is a past board chair and past treasurer. He is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and The American Institute of CPAs. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and is a Certified Public Accountant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Budzynski lives in Fairfax, Va. with his wife and two sons, and is very active in his local community.

The Nonprofit CFO Awards will be held on Oct. 10, 2019 in Washington, D.C. Co-founded in 2006 by Tate & Tryon and West, Lane & Schlager, this annual event recognizes and honors the contributions of nonprofit financial executives who demonstrate a vision for operational excellence, innovation in finance and management, exceptional leadership and commitment to improving accountability.
